"Five nations with the lowest infant mortality rates
have 70 percent of all births attended by midwives."
California State Legislature, 1993
TRENDS
For the past 20 years California licensed only registered nurses (RNs) to be
midwives. Recent legislation created a second category called Licensed
Midwives. These midwives are not required to be RNs. The Licensing
Division of the Medical Board of California began certifying Licensed
Midwives September 1995.

- Midwifery Education in California
In California, in order to practice legally according to the medical establishment, you must either be a religious practitioner (fairly rare)
or a licensed practitioner, i.e. M.D., CNM or LM (Licensed Midwife). This last license is available either through the grandmothering
process that is happening now but ends next year, or by going through a three-year program such as is being constructed by Elizabeth
Davis of _Heart & Hands_ fame. Her school is called the California Institute of Midwifery, I believe.

verification of knowledge and skills and the successful completion of both a Written
Examination and Skills Assessment. The CPM credential requires training in
out-of-hospital settings.

... Nurse-Midwifery (NM) is a well established area of study at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. This area
combines academic preparation with clinical skills for the independent management of health care of women and
newborns.
Nurse-Midwives assist women and families to promote and maintain health, and to facilitate optimal individual and
family integrity in the context of culture and community. Upon successful completion of the course of study, graduates
will be eligible to take the national certification examination offered by the American College of Nurse-Midwives

- Sage Femme means "wise woman" and French for "midwife". We are an independent nurse-midwifery practice
offering safe and satisfying health care to women in Montgomery and the surrounding counties of Texas.
Because childbirth is a normal physiological process, requiring little, if any, intervention, Sage Femme
approaches pregnancy and birth as a normal life event and pregnant women as healthy until demonstrated
otherwise. Childbirth should be a creative, fulfilling and safe experience and many parents today desire to
participate fully in this creative process. We at Sage Femme are committed to meet the needs of those families
seeking out-of-hospital birth as well as midwifery-oriented, women- centered health care.

teaching activities and international projects we receive substantial research funding through competitive tendering.
The School of Nursing and Midwifery is one of four Schools in the Faculty of Medicine of the University. Our partner Schools of
Medicine, Clinical Dentistry and Health and Related Research share with us a desire to maximise opportunities for multidisciplinary
education and research across the total spectrum of health care.

- Now everyone can learn the HOWS of Midwifery, no matter where they
live!
These workshops provide essential exposure to important midwifery
skills using models, simulators, class participation and lots of hands-on
practice are appropriate for students at all levels.
Our goal is to provide a way to bridge the gap between book learning
and actual practice of these important skills.
We recognize a need for students to have hands-on experience of these
skills in order to build confidence and gain a better understanding of
material learned. While these intensives can not take the place of an
apprenticeship, it will make students more valuable to midwives looking
for apprentices.

Welcome to the web site for the Parkland School of Nurse-Midwifery (PSNM)
PSNM is a basic certificate program in nurse-midwifery. PSNM is fully accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives
Division of Accreditation, a health credentialling group recognized by the US Department of Education. There are less than fifty such
programs in the United States.
Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) are registered nurses who have been educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery.
As stated in the philosophy of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, "Certified Nurse-Midwives believe that every individual has
the right to safe, satisfying health care with respect for human dignity and cultural variations." Nurse-midwives care for women and
their families prenatally, during birth, postpartally as well as providing basic gynecologic care to nonpregnant women throughout the
life cycle.
Parkland Memorial Hospital is the primary clinical site for student nurse-midwives at PSNM. In 1994, more than 15,000 babies
were born at this institution. Parkland Memorial Hospital (PMH) also has an active outpatient system so that women and families can
be seen in communities all around the metropolitan area. Within this system, thousands of family planning, prenatal and pediatric visits
occur annually. PSNM has a close affiliation with the nurse-midwives who work at PMH, as well as all the different members of the
health care team, especially obstetrician gynecologists from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
