  • What is a DOULA? (from the DONA Website) The word, "doula," comes from the Greek word for the most important female slave or servant in an ancient Greek household, the woman who probably helped the lady of the house through her childbearing. The word has come to refer to "a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth." (Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, Mothering the Mother)

  • Doulas ease patient labor For family physician Chip Taylor, M.D., doulas during labor and delivery are a necessity. "I've done labor and delivery with doulas and without," he said, "and labor really seems to work better for the patient if there is a doula there." Doulas are women who support the laboring patient. They don't work as midwives; they aren't nurse practitioners. Doulas serve as labor coaches and advocates for the woman giving birth.

  • Doulas Aired on Market Place: November 4, 1997 Summary: It used to be giving birth simply involved a woman, her doctor and perhaps a midwife. But now more women and their partners, are seeking emotional support as well as clinical care. That's led to a revival of the doula, a Greek term for a woman who helps other women and their partners, through childbirth. Doulas are NOT midwives. They do not do clinical work. Doulas are coaches, cheerleaders and counsellors, and for a fee they will work with a couple from early pregnancy up to delivery.

  • Why use a Doula? In order to have a positive birth experience, most women need continuous labor support. Although obstetrical nurses are experienced in dealing with a laboring woman's emotional and physical needs, they can seldom guarantee the support they provide will last throughout the labor - especially in hospital settings where shift changes, coffee breaks, heavy paperwork and busy nights regularly occur. Some OB nurses handle several laboring couples at a time. Midwives may be able to offer more labor support, but they too have clinical duties to which they must attend.

  • What Is a Doula? The word "doula" comes from ancient Greek, meaning "servant," but it is now used to refer to a woman who helps other women. It has been applied to childbirth to "a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during, and just after childbirth." (from Klause, Kennell, and Klause).

  • A Help for Fathers During the Labor and Birth of Their Child Our culture is one of the few that does not provide continuous supportive care for the laboring woman. Even though men are choosing to take active roles in the birth of their children, they are often put in a very uncomfortable situation. They attend childbirth and parenting classes and remain with their partners during the birth process, but often feel that they are expected to be the "labor authority" when they do not feel qualified for that role. No matter how good the childbirth education class was that he attended, his experience attending births is very limited, and, for the first time father, non-existent. Many fathers realize that they need reassurance, support, and guidance, also.

  • Of all the gadgets, gewgaws and clothing items I associate with parenting, none has been more fundamental to me than my sling. This is one I made, but there are so many wonderful ones available out there that I almost think of them as "clothing". Humans have been tying babies on since knots were invented (before then we were hairier, and the kids could just hang on themselves!) and there are as many different ways to tie a baby on as there are ways to make a baby laugh.

  • Hi my name is Kari Butler. I am a Doula. A doula, in my opinion, is a woman who supports a woman who is pregnant with information and emotional support. She also supports a woman who is in labor with unwavering physical, information, and emotional support, and supports a woman postpartum with information and emotional support. I feel that everyone can benefit from having a Doula. Let me tell you a little about my self. I am married to Dave; he is in the Navy. He is a very supportive husband. I had problems getting pregnant, so I was put on clomid and with in two cycles I was pregnant. I had a long birth at 42.5 weeks with my water breaking first. My son was 9 pounds 5 ounces and 20 1/2 inches long with a 15 1/4 inch head circumference. Last year my niece was having problems with her mother, so we took her in to our home. So I have a seventeen-year-old and a two and a half-year-old. I am very involved in my Church family and enjoy living a Christian life. I have also started a new adventure, Mary Kay, I feel that my clients can benefit from facials and hormones change your face during pregnancy and postpartum. I love Mary Kay, and grew up with it, and was re-introduced to Mary Kay just recently. But Mary Kay is only a very part time adventure. I am a very busy person, trying to keep my priorities straight, God First, Family Second, Doula Third and Mary Kay Last.

  • Gentle Birth You are a doula You are assisting at someone else's birth. If you must take the lead, lead so that the mother is helped, yet still free and in charge. Do good without show or fuss. Facilitate what is happening, rather than what you think ought to be happening. When the baby is born, the mother will rightly say, "We did it ourselves."

  • FamilyWeb's misc.kids FAQs Presenting frequently asked questions (FAQs) from the misc.kids newsgroups. FamilyWeb thanks the many FAQ writer-volunteers for their efforts in making this important information available to the FamilyWeb community. Some links are email addresses for the author rather than the actual web page. If you email the author for the FAQ, ask if s/he wants to put their FAQ on FamilyWeb. Familyweb is a library and not the author of these FAQs, so if you would like to add your comments to a FAQ please contact the author of the FAQ. Since this site is not a money-making venture I have to balance the time I spend updating it with work and family time. Therefore some FAQs may be out of date and newer versions may be available elsewhere on the web.

  • Natural Parenting News Doulas - Supporting Childbirth Doulas – or childbirth supporters – are becoming a common part of labour and birthing experiences in North America. (See article in Natural Life Issue 52). The Doula works alongside a midwife or physician, providing pre- and post-natal education, emotional support and physical comfort. A group of Doulas in Ontario has formed an organization called Southern Ontario Labour Support (SOLS), which is dedicated to developing the profession and promoting public awareness of their services. SOLS’ resources include a referral service, public speakers for health care organizations, labour support training and a Code of Ethics for those interested in becoming Doulas, and peer support for women already in the profession.
