http://www.aitex.com.au/aitexnew/continui.htm - CONTINUITY OF CARER
Every woman needs midwifery care at the time of giving birth. Midwife means, literally "with woman". Whether the woman is
supported by a friend or a professional midwife, the one who is with her through the strong labour and birth is being "mid-wife".
Unfortunately, in many births the professional midwife is more involved with the management of medical equipment and paperwork,
fulfilling the role of obstetric nurse rather than midwife, and neglecting the woman.
http://www.efn.org/~djz/birth/add695/mipp.html - Midwives in private practice
For centuries midwives have worked among their communities providing care to women. Historically midwives have held a philosophy
of care based on the belief that pregnancy is, basically, a healthy process and a normal part of life, growth and development. It is this
belief that guides the way in which midwives in private practice work.
